When you are looking at listings of Florida homes, the taxes paid in the current year, by the current owner, may be markedly different from the taxes you will be expected to pay when you purchase the home. One reason is that Florida is a "Homestead" State. For homeowners that claim homestead exemption (not all do), the property tax increases are capped each year. Therefore, homeowners who have lived in a home for many years may pay a very low tax rate. When the home is purchased, the tax rate is adjusted to the new selling price!

It is difficult to use a rule of thumb to estimate the taxes on a newly aquired home because the tax rate varies by county and changes occasionally. The most accurate estimate can be obtained from the County Property Appraisers Office. Just follow the links below to the appropriate appraisers office: Martin County , Port Saint Lucie County , Borward County . It is a little more difficult to obtain and estimate for Palm Beach County. First, click on Palm Beach County Property Tax Estimate. The Tax Appraisers Office will open in a new page. Then:

1. Search for the specific property in question by property address or owner's name and select "search".

2. When the property detail appears, scroll to the bottom of the page. On the right side of the page, click on "Tax Calculator"

3. In the Tax Calculator, Enter the price of the home and click "Calculate".
